1. Sensing Fundamentals

 We conduct the R&D on remote sensing technologies and space environment measurement technologies to acquire, collect, and visualize diverse information from various things and phenomena surrounding human beings by using electromagnetic waves; space-time standards technologies to generate, supply, and utilize accurate and reliable time and frequencies as a basis for social and economic activities; and electromagnetic environmental technologies to ensure electromagnetic compatibility among wide ranges of equipment and systems. In addition, we also promote R&D on data processing and analysis technologies including the utilization of artificial intelligence (AI).

2. Integrated ICT

 Centering on advanced optical network technologies, wireless communication technologies, space communication technology, and technologies to integrate all of these three, we conduct the R&D on accessing technologies to store diverse real-space information and supply the users and terminal devices with valuable information; core network technologies to globally transmit and process large volume of diverse information at ultra-high speed but low power consumption, network control technologies to realize a flexible and efficient utilization of a network as a whole; technologies to realize efficient networking even under the constraints of limited resources; and network technologies to transform conventional data centers and clouds into more advanced and evolved ones; and so forth.

3. Data Utilization and Analytics Platform

[Speech Translation, AI, and Human Interface]
 We conduct the R&D on large-scale information analysis technologies to retrieve and manage diverse, large-scale information including linguistic, audio, visual, and environmental data, creating and transmitting new values through such intellectual activities as recognition, analysis, learning, inference, and prediction; multilingual translation and speech processing technologies for eliminating the boundary of language, and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies to realize such communications; and human interface technologies including information visualization and communication technologies to facilitate the understanding of the value and meaning of information; and so forth.
 We conduct R&D on technologies for generating (or collecting/acquiring) , interpreting and utilizing data essential for R&D of AI by using diverse methods, and integrated AI technologies to create knowledge that can be used for providing society with such data as new value (researchers are particularly encouraged to pursue the possibility of utilizing data based on a keen understanding of the nature of scientific data).
[Real Space Information Analysis Technology]
 We conduct the R&D on data acquisition and analysis technologies; database technology; artificial intelligence (AI) technology; data mining technology; geographical information system (GIS) ; information visualization; smart services; and so forth, in order to acquire and integrate IoT big data from various fields including environment, traffic and health care related fields and to create values through the analysis, learning and prediction with the data.
[Information and Neural Networks]
 We conduct the R&D on new information analysis and info-communication technologies inspired by the brain's information processing mechanism learned through the analysis of human brain functions; brain function measurement and analysis technologies to realize such new technologies; technologies to store and utilize large volumes of brain function information.

4. Cybersecurity

[Cybersecurity]
 We conduct the R&D on the most advanced cyber security and cryptographic technologies to build and maintain safe and secure information and communication network environments; security testbed technologies; interdisciplinary technologies between machine learning and cybersecurity; privacy enhancing technologies to contribute to the utilization of personal data; and so forth. In addition, we conduct cyber-attack analysis and the development and test operations of cybersecurity systems for the contribution to cybersecurity research.
[Training ICT personnel in the field of cybersecurity]
 We conduct the R&D aimed at finding and filling the technical requirements for developing ICT literacy and training ICT personnel to achieve a higher cybersecurity level: research, analysis, and study on the demand of industries and educators for ICT personnel; study on individual advanced technologies for training ICT personnel, including development of effective training methods, construction of environments suitable for practical drill and training (e.g. simulated environment) and measurement and visualization of the effect of training; integrated research on the application of ICT personnel training systems that integrate all of the aforementioned findings.

5. Frontier Research

 We conduct the R&D on technologies that bring a new paradigm shift to the future ICT: technologies for the realization of highly functional and efficient next-generation function devices that utilize new functional materials including nanomaterials organic materials, bio materials, superconductors, and semiconductors; ultra-high frequency (terahertz) technologies for the utilization of unused frequencies; quantum info-communication technologies for the pursuit of ultimate safety, high-capacity characteristics, and ultra-high speed operations based on principles of quantum mechanics; future information analysis and info-communication technologies inspired by biological bodies and functions; and so forth. Besides, we conduct the R&D in emerging and interdisciplinary areas related to these technologies.

6. ICT emerging from interdisciplinary research, collaborative achievement between different fields, boundary region, and new concept beyond conventional fields’ constraints

 We are seeking competent individuals from the three viewpoints: the viewpoint that new values are to be created by the mutual interfusion and collaboration between different research fields; the viewpoint that novel research fields are to be created for continuous ICT development in the future; and the viewpoint that it is required to promote such activities as open innovation by industry-academia-government collaboration and international cooperation, the realization and utilization of testbeds (e.g. network, cloud, and emulation), data sciences, and so forth, which are not always confined to the framework of five research areas beforementioned.
