Members of the Photonic Network System Laboratory at NICT received the Special Award at the 30th Ceremony for “Advanced Technology” in the Business and Industry Category on July 28th 2016.

The “Advanced Technology” Awards Ceremony was set up in 1986 and bestows awards in categories such as “Students” and “Business and Industry”. It was established with the aim to support young researchers who are actively working in the advanced technology field by increasing their motivation for research and to encourage creativity.

The special award received by NICT recognizes research achievements on an “ultra large capacity transmission system with the use of multi-core fiber and optical frequency comb for future optical communications” conducted by Ben Puttnam (Senior Researcher), Ruben Soares Luis (Senior Researcher), Werner Klaus (Senior Researcher), Jun Sakaguchi (Senior Researcher), Delgado Mendinueta Jose Manuel (Senior Researcher), Yoshinari Awaji (Research Manager) and Naoya Wada (Director General) of the Photonic Network System Laboratory.

The recipients pioneered research on a new optical fiber and a new transmission technique that will be able to deal with the continuously increasing data traffic on the internet. As also pursued in research at many of the world’s top research institutes this work is an important milestone in demonstrating the effectiveness of using multicore fibers in the realization of next-generation optical networks. It is expected that these new technologies will contribute to the optical communications infrastructure in the coming years.
