Helping protect astronauts from radiation risks while promoting the use of satellite data and the creation of future lunar industries

Kawasaki, Nagoya, Yokosuka and Tokyo, Japan, October 21, 2026 — Fujitsu Limited (Fujitsu), Nagoya University, Tokai National Higher Education and Research System (Nagoya University), the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC), and the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT), together with their research partners in Japan and Portugal, today announced the development of the world’s first technology that uses observational data from five spacecraft to objectively, reproducibly and automatically determine the parameters of physical simulations used to calculate the arrival of solar energetic particles (SEPs), improving the simulations’ accuracy. SEPs can expose astronauts to radiation and cause satellite malfunctions. The results were published in the journal Scientific Reports.

Building on these efforts, NICT and The MITRE Corporation (MITRE) will jointly launch an AI security competition called "AI Breach Challenge."

NICT and VXB Aerospace have launched collaborative research on advanced antenna design for high-accuracy wireless positioning. By combining NICT’s antenna design, simulation, measurement, and evaluation expertise with VXB Aerospace’s generative design technology, the collaboration aims to develop compact, high-performance antennas for wireless positioning applications.

– Implication for instantaneous memory and potential medical application to bipolar disorder –

The National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT, President: OHNO Hideo, Ph.D.) has discovered molecular mechanism of synaptic facilitation, instantaneous strengthening of synaptic transmission, which may be physiological basis of instantaneous memory. Synaptic facilitation has been known for a long time and studied by major physiologists. However, its mechanism and its biological meaning still remain ambiguous. This study revealed that intramolecular interaction of a calcium binding protein, Synaptotagmin 7 (Syt7) functions for synaptic facilitation, and the interaction between Syt7 domains is required for memory. This study using a fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster, which is a model animal for genetic analysis, provides an insight for general mechanism of memory, which may suggest new designs of future ICT. Since this is the first elucidation of molecular mechanism of Syt7, this study has the potential in the future to be applied to diseases, which has been reported to be related to Syt7.
