To actively promote the recruitment of young researchers and research engineers, we will implement a 'New Graduate Track'. In principle, the costs of obtaining a doctoral degree after joining NICT will be covered by our organization. For those who do not hold a doctoral degree at the time of appointment but wish to obtain one, as well as those who are enrolled in a doctoral program at the time of appointment, NICT will, in principle, cover the costs necessary for obtaining a doctoral degree after joining.

This position carries out research and development management tasks (research project design and related investigations, research project promotion, industry-academia-government collaboration, research fund acquisition and allocation, intellectual property and standardization, etc.) and contributes to the R&D of state-of-the-art ICT with a Mid-to-Long Term perspective.

The position may also be involved in R&D management, overall planning of technology strategies and in the operations management of the institute.

While having sufficient expertise in the relevant field of technology will be the key factor in the selection process, the candidates' willingness to actively take part in management affairs such as promotion and management of projects as well as personnel training will also be taken into account.

Our organization is hiring research engineers across a wide range of fields listed under the “Focused Areas of Research and Development.” In particular, we are seeking research engineers in the following areas: Universal Communications, Quantum ICT.

  • In principle, be able to assume the position on April 1, 2027.
  • Be born on or after April 2, 2000.
  • Have sufficient knowledge and skills to contribute to R&D in ICT.

  1. The position may involve planning, and other internal work that may not be directly related to research (R&D management and assistant work).
  2. Fixed-term secondments to governmental institutions, public interest corporations, and private companies may occur.
  3. Relocations to other Research Centers (domestic or abroad) may occur.

Compensation and Benefits

This is a "Permanent Research Engineer Position" ; no employment term will be appointed.
(You will not be regarded as a government official and the retirement age is 62. The retirement age will be extended in the future, in compliance with the government's system of extending the mandatory retirement age.)

Salary (example)

Basic Monthly Salary 283,000JPY (Starting salary for bachelor graduates with researcher adjustment allowance included)
Basic Monthly Salary 310,000JPY (Starting salary for master graduates with researcher adjustment allowance included)
Basic Monthly Salary 346,000JPY (Starting salary for doctor graduates with researcher adjustment allowance included)

The following allowances will be permitted in addition to the above:

  • Dependent allowance…… Employees with dependent family members will receive; e.g., 13,000 JPY/month per child, etc.
  • Housing allowance…… Employees with rented accommodation will receive a maximum of 28,000 JPY/month.
  • Commuting allowance…… Employees will receive commuting costs a maximum of 150,000 JPY/month; e.g., the monthly commuter pass fee for public transportation.
  • End-of-term allowance (Bonus)…… A bonus equivalent to about 4.6 months of salary will be permitted (based on the FY2024 data).

In addition, overtime allowance, qualification allowance, special researcher allowance, and special service allowance may be permitted for those that apply.

*The basic monthly salary will be determined considering your academic background, work and research experiences, and will be based on NICT's pay scale for the position.

*The basic monthly starting salary is an estimated amount as of April 1st, 2026.(Salary levels are expected to be adjusted in accordance with the National Personnel Authority’s recommendations.)

Work Schedule, etc.

  1. Full-time, 5 days (average of 37.5 hours) a week. A 'flextime' labor system is applied in principle.
  2. Annual Paid Leave 15 days in the first year (through April 1st to December 31st) 20 days in the second year and onwards (through January 1st to December 31st) Available on an hourly basis
  3. Other special paid leave can be granted. Telecommuting Program is available.
  4. Childcare and nursing care leave are also granted.

Selection Process

1. Reception of application forms and document screening

After careful document screening,and those who pass will be notified of the executive interview schedule on emails in mid-March.

2. Executive interview

Candidates will be called for an interview with the executives at the headquarters etc (final selections).
This will be the final selection stage and is scheduled in mid-April.
You can choose between Japanese and English as the language.
We will ask all interviewees to submit the following documents on My Page.
In principle, interviews will be conducted at the head office (Koganei City, Tokyo), but they can also be conducted online. The travel expenses for the interviews will not be reimbursed.
