Steering Committee Meeting, November 2022
On the evening of the 30th of November 2022, the ASEAN IVO Steering Committee hosted its first in-person meeting in three years at Chulalongkorn University, Thailand. This meeting followed the first in-person forum in three years and was also the first in-person meeting to be hosted by Steering Committee Chairperson and NICT Vice President Hiroyuki Yano, since he became the Committee's Chairperson in 2020.
As this was the first in-person forum in three years, the Steering Committee's discussion mainly revolved around the experience of that year's forum, particularly in contrast to the online forums during the pandemic. There was broadly praise for how much better the experience of an in-person event is in comparison to an online one. However, some frustration was expressed about how brief the Q&As are and this prompted a discussion about possible changes that could be made to the forums schedule and length, to allow for more time for discussion and interaction at the forum.
There was some discussion of project administration by the Secretariat, particularly regarding the frequency of last-minute purchase applications by project leaders. Members of the Steering Committee were also encouraged to promote ASEAN IVO more within their own countries, to boost project proposal applications.
Lastly, the Secretariat asked that at future Steering Committee meetings a member or two of the Committee give a presentation on current policy and the general direction of R&D relating to ICT in their respective country. The Steering Committee agreed to this idea.
The next meeting will be hosted by the Institute for Infocomm Research, Singapore, in March 2023. The National University of Singapore agreed to be the first to give a presentation on their country’s research policies and direction.
