The Exploratory Research project explores the next steps in the work of the Space-Time Standards laboratory. Its intention is to open up new options, methods and capabilities of researches that will benefit society in the future.

Tasks of the Exploratory Research Project

Ion clocks
Optical clocks with one or multiple trapped ions are an alternative technology to the already operating optical lattice clock. In addition, trapped ions are expected to play a role as a network-node of future quantum networks.
Terahertz frequency standard
Frequency standards in the THz-band fill an important gap between microwave and optical frequencies.
Geodesy for time and frequency
At the most precise level, a clock's measurement depends on its exact location in Earth's gravitational field.

Previous Work

VLBI - Very Long Baseline Interferometry
From 1974 to 2021, NICT and its predecessor institutions have researched VLBI techniques. The 34m Kashima radio telescope operated by NICT served to develop new methods for geodesy and astronomical observations and even time and frequency transfer.
