Steering Committee Meeting, November 2015
This was ASEAN IVO’s first Steering Committee meeting, coinciding with the 2015 ASEAN IVO Forum, and was hosted in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Each country was represented by 1-2 people and they discussed the general running of the organisation, debating policy and strategy for ASEAN IVO as well as determining project selection criteria.
It was decided that meetings should be chaired by the vice president of NICT, on this occasion Dr. Fumihiko Tomita, and co-chaired by a representative for the host country, on this occasion president and CEO of MIMOS, Datuk Abdul Wahab Abdullah.
Next, there was discussion about research topics for ASEAN IVO. The following were suggested. With consideration to the ASEAN region, topics that directly relate to business development in cities, and topics that address issues for rural regions should be 2 major pillars for research. With regards to the former, it was thought urban mobility was a good potential topic. The impact a topic would have on society and business was said to be important. Any topics should take into consideration the master plan for the larger ASEAN region. It was stressed that, while NICT would be suporting part of the budget for these projects, research teams’ institutions should also chip in and each institute should build partnerships with government or private bodies. The meeting influenced the main points for calls and set calls to commence in the near future.
The next Steering Committee meeting was planned for the March 11, 2016 in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, to coincide with a rural communications workshop hosted by NIPTICT. At the next meeting, they would select projects for funding.
