The Space-Time Standards Laboratory promotes Space-Time Synchronization as an important technological contribution to Beyond 5G / 6G, focusing not only on technical developments, but also on standardization.

The Standardization Team was now awarded the Encouragement Award of the ITU Association of Japan for their work on the ITU-R Report M.2516 "Future technology trends of terrestrial International Mobile Telecommunications systems towards 2030 and beyond" (FTT) which culminated in its adoption. The standardization of terrestrial mobile communications in the ITU usually begins with such a document covering the technologies expected to be introduced. NICT proactively carried out drafting work, such as presenting draft input documents for the FTT ahead of other countries and other organizations in Japan and overseas. In cooperation with Finnish colleagues, Researchers at NICT took the lead on the section "Technologies to natively support real-time services and communications". This section includes topics related to NICT's work on space-time standards, such as atomic clock chips, Wi-Wi, and the cluster time system.

The award ceremony was held at the Keio Plaza Hotel on May 17, 2023, and Senior Researcher Dr. Shiga and Senior Research Technician Dr. Yasuda from the team attended to receive the crystal awards. The Encouragement Award is given to persons or organizations expected to contribute further achievements related to ITU activities for international standardization and cooperation.
