The JJY Standard Time and Frequency Signal transmission is an IEEE Milestone!
IEEE, the world’s largest technical professional organization, has recognized the transmission of the Standard Time and Frequency signal with callsign JJY as an IEEE Milestone. Each IEEE Milestone honors a groundbreaking innovation that has benefited humanity in the fields of electrical engineering or computing, made at least 25 years ago.
The JJY Standard Time and Frequency signal has contributed to Japan’s society and industry ever since its introduction in 1940, enabling infrastructure like broadcasting, electricity and transportation by providing a shared time and frequency.
The JJY transmission established the world’s second standard time signal station, and it has supported Japan’s postwar reconstruction, technical innovation and modernization. It is still widely used by radio-controlled clocks and other devices.
The National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT; President: Hideyuki Tokuda) is proud to continue the operation of JJY following its predecessor organizations, back to the Electrotechnical Laboratory that started the transmission.
